Grad Extravaganza Celebration

To honour and recognize our graduating class, the school organized a “Grad Week” from Monday May 31 – June 4th with various spirit days, a free lunch from our culinary arts program and freezies.  This year’s graduating class did not have the opportunity to celebrate as a large group or experience many of the celebratory events previous grad classes had.

To cap our Grad Week, we planned a special Grad Celebration during Block B on Friday June 4th.  With the current health orders not allowing us to have our traditional grad banquet and dance, we decided to bring some of those special elements to our grads by utilizing learning cohorts, zoom conferencing, and the many talents of our students and staff.

Our event took place in our outdoor courtyard and was live streamed to the grade 12 classrooms.  Mr. Allan was our emcee and guided the audience through the afternoon’s festivities.  Like at our grad banquet, we had Adam Mckenna give a toast to the staff, Mrs. Veltkamp did a toast to the graduating class, and Mrs. McMillan and her yearbook class put together a grad slideshow.  We also organized a series of mystery events (hoola hooping, dancing, trivia) where representatives were called down from their classes to the courtyard to compete for points, prizes and goodies.  To cap the event, we brought in a dunk tank where some lucky grade 12 students had the opportunity to dunk one of our staff faculty.  Thank you to Mr. Powell, Mr. Hoglund, Mr. Allan and Constable Semler for volunteering to go into our dunk tank.

Our graduating seniors were very appreciative of the event and the afternoon was filled with many laughs and smiles and as a school we were happy that we were able to provide an activity that allowed our graduates to connect and celebrate their achievements as a graduating class.
